Ural Documentation

Why use Ural?: Simple. It is all about temporary bookmarks.

• • (Longer Answer) The original reasons for Ural, were to write all my bookmarks to one master file. However, doing such a thing quickly becomes arduous. Plus, after six months or a year. You'll have to re-check the links. Since, Internet materials seem to vanish so quickly, change, never change, move, or outright vanish. (Also, the complexity of making such a web site writer program, requires a lot of time.) (It is still scheduled for production. Just, I need to address some other priorities.)

Then, I realized, I'm making this the hard way. One, why not use PHP, MySQL, common HTML forms on my web server, and “just use it” for cataloging daily bookmarks?

Next, this is rather easy. The requirements are modest. The code depth is small. The visual appearance is “right there.” Problem solved.

Plus, have you started using Bloglines or other RSS Feed Reader apps? Day after day, you are innundated with more and more, links to here, links to there. An HTML version of Ural is ideal for them.

Requirements: Your own web server (or hosting) on the Internet with PHP, MySQL services. Otherwise, if you want to run it locally on your own Linux box. There is nothing preventing you from doing such, via VPN networking. Also, even if, you are only interested in running on a local Windows system. I have a suggestion to accomodate your needs, also. (More on this, later.)

Getting Things Done: Perhaps, you have heard of Web 2.0, Social Applications (/ web sites), Basecamp, Flikr, Del.icio.us, 43Folders, LifeHacker, Meta-Filter, Apache Foundation, or just google it, 43 Things. Plus, the home page of Getting Things Done.

Well, my problems started, once I tried keeping up with the daily news on these sites. Of course, we've had Slashdot (& recently Digg.) for years. Thus, enter RSS Feed Readers. Ones, I use are BlogLines and BlogBridge. Again, they make it easier to track such sites. However, Digg for instance turns over 50 links, almost every day.

Plus, I can't keep up with it. Thus, the reason for Ural v0.12. Soon, I'll release the source, and prepare a "short sweet" manual, of how to use, how to install, and how to reset it. (Yes, you'll need your own web hosting with MySQL and one DSN available.) (Just one table required. Name it to whatever you like.)

Alternatives: The other day, I found an easy to install personal web server (free) application for MS Windows users. I have to test it first. However, I let you know about it, then.

Web Site Colors & Hidden Pages: You'll notice. the docs2.html page is only listed in the left hand side menu. Plus, when you enter the documentation pages. The color scheme changes a bit. Reason? When you’re reading the documentation. You shouldn't be jumping around. Otherwise, you can click the home page logo & see everything.

• What about a site map? Answer: Site isn't big enough to warrant a map.
