Interfaces among the various services should be independent of physical location. For example, a Groupware Editor on one machine can inquire of a Document Manager on another. Additionally, certain services can be cooperative -- if an XSL Directory does not know how to translate between two XMLs it can inquire of trusts XSL Directories on other servers.
