stat is not a standard program in many Linux distributions nor
FreeBSD.  FreeBSD's stat(1) from ports is not compatible with the
invocation in rdiff-backup.  AFAIK it doesn't even exist in NetBSD.
As such, is there any particular reason you don't just use st_rdev and
remove the stat shell call entirely?  Its just as "portable" and
probably faster.  Besides, as it stands I shudder to think what is
going to happen if somebody creates a device with a space in its file
