About BrewTools

Brewtools is a package to record, track progress of, and create recipes for brewing beer. The package allows the user to input their own recipes and ingredients and then track the progress of brews in the making. Included is a tool called the formulator which aides the user in creating new recipes based on familiar styles with user preferences. Preferences for this include things like alcohol content, color, and bitterness.

The project is currently in its infancy, but has plenty of mostly working code. It requires Python, PyGTK, and GTK+ to run, but a strong knowledge of programming and debugging is a big help at this point ;) If you'd like to take it for a test drive, go ahead and check out the CVS source tree.

This project was started over a pint while enjoying a bit of post-class euphoria. We were in a software engineering class tasked with comming up with a new and fresh project idea to work on as a group for the semester. It has since gone through many similarly boozed planning meetings and several late night caffeinated coding sessions. At the end of the semester, we presented the project to the class, bussinesses, a research conference, and a brewing club. Though the product was rough and unfinished, the hope is that we can create something more out of it and eventually provide a working product.
